Windows Mobile 6.5: Not Dead

With the announcement of the new Windows Phone 7 series coming later this year, many have already begun to place the memories of the WinMo 6.5 series in the back of their minds. For owners of the older version of the OS however, the announcement of a new version meant a scare for their mobile phones.

It has already been announced –and it is pretty obvious, that the existing Windows Mobile smart phones will not only be compatible with an update to the new OS, but no existing WinMo device can actually run the new Series 7. Even devices such as the HTC HD2 have its limitations, and most WinMo phones do not even have the much needed capacitive touch screen.

Still Microsoft has announced that it will not be abandoning the old platform. Instead, WinMo 6.5 will be renamed to the Windows Phone Classic series once the newer OS comes out. Many are already speculating that the older OS will be updated with better office and connectivity features that augment the needs of Microsoft’s business class clients.

Currently, MS has the second largest market in the business sector –next to BlackBerry. While the presentation of the new WP7 totally impressing many consumers, the business sector has been forgotten –WP7 is certainly not designed with actual office functions in mind (aside from the “office” menu). Instead of using the new platform for business users, Microsoft has another plan in mind.

The WinMo 6.X series however is well equipped for business needs. It would not be surprising to see current generation WinMo devices being updated with more practical applications and capabilities. Microsoft has announced that it will still develop the OS and still create new apps and additional features as the time progresses.
