Developer’s Perspective: Windows Phone 7 in Action
If there is something that is rather scary about the new Microsoft mobile platform, it is the fact that the OS seems to be following the footsteps of the Apple iPhone too closely. Microsoft has already announced that they will be screening and on occasion, rejecting submitted applications. And while they will be giving developers the full details on why an app has not been accepted (as well as provide insight on what can be changed or improved), the fact of the matter is that the whole setup feels a little too similar to Apple’s less than happy developer community.
Not that everything is bad; Microsoft has been generous enough to give away free LG Panthers packed with the developer version of WP7 to many developers. This is not giving developers a chance to see their apps running on the phone itself –the best way to check software. Aside from a few quirks during the boot-up sequence of the device, it is expected that the retail version will behave much like the test unit.
One rather discouraging update was the fact that a special version of the Zune software is needed in order to sync the phone to a computer. It pretty much seems like the old iTunes deal going on for the iPhone and the iPod, but we are hoping that this restriction will no longer apply when the device is ready for retail.
Speaking of the LG Panther, this impressive touch screen smart phone comes with a WVGA capacitive touch screen display, a 5 mega pixel camera and a slide out QWERTY keyboard. We have yet to learn what the CPU speed is, though it is expected that it is running on a Qualcomm chip. The LG Panther stands out from the other upcoming WP7 devices not only for being the first, but also because it is the only device (so far) that comes with a physical slide out QWERTY keyboard.

LG GW990
The LG GW990 is the new phone recently unveiled by LG at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. Featuring the largest mobile phone screen ever seen, the phone has been quoted as the new wave of touch screens. Running on the Intel Moorestown platform, the phone has a great CPU speed, and subsequently gives the user a fast and enjoyable experience. Details about the LG GW990 are very limited, as LG has chosen not to release the exact details of the phone, although we can guess fairly accurately what they will be.
If it is anything like its predecessor, the phone is likely to have a 8 megapixel digital camera. Many reputable digital cameras are around 8 megapixel, so for the price of a phone you are in fact getting two things, the phone as well as the digital camera. The phone runs the Linux-based Moblin operating system, which is made and produced by Intel. Linux has a great reputation for fast and error free computing, and with mobile phones there is no exception.
LG have stated the GW990 can be used for 4G connections, which can include the LTE system, although you would almost certainly need extra hardware to make it run correctly. A huge 16GB of internal storage will give you seemingly endless amounts of space. 16GB is enough room to hold around 3000 songs, 40 hours of video or hundreds of thousands of pictures. The large 512mb of RAM will ensure that the phone keeps running fast and effectively, with minimal amount of lag and slow speeds. Built into the side of the phone is a microSD memory card slot, so if for whatever reason you do ruin out of storage room you can add more, up to 64GB worth!
Many applications are included with the phone, including a built in compass to help you find your way if you are ever lost in the middle of nowhere with your mobile phone to hand. The handset is set to be released in the USA in the second half of 2010. A price tag has not been released yet, but sources say it could be around the same as the last model from LG, which was around £700, a huge price to pay for a mobile phone. Unfortunately as of now there are no plans to introduce the phone to the UK, according to an LG spokesman. People seem to believe that LG are just testing it out first though, and once they know that it will sell it is expected to make an appearance in the UK.

LG GD910 watch phone
Anyone who was ever a fan of Dick Tracy when they were younger will remember wanting to own a watch phone. Talking to your wrist seemed like the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, even just a few years ago. The potential popularity of such a device was realised early on in the history of mobile phones with many watch phones making their way onto the market that, quite frankly, failed to impress. They were always lacking a certain something and in many cases just simply didn't work well at all, either as a watch or a phone.
Yet mobile phone manufacturers are still persisting with the idea. LG and Samsung both have their own watch phones set for release and neither company is deterred by the less than satisfactory reception received by earlier devices. What is propping up their confidence? Principally the fact that mobile technology has advanced at such a
rapid pace in just the last few years that these companies now have the ability and knowhow to actually produce the watch phones that all those young boys dreamed about many years ago.
There are three main technological areas that really make this new wave of watch phones more appetising. Touch screen technology combined with high speed 3G data connections and the advances in video calling mean that these watch phones can now fit into the fantasy that once surrounded them. As noted, LG and Samsung are leading the way with the new wave of watch phones and the initial offerings from both companies are actually very similar in technological prowess. If one were to choose however, the LG GD910 would probably come out tops.
Both watch phones make use of the best capacitive technology in their touch sensitive screens that offers much greater sensitivity,
so you will not need to be stabbing your arm with your fingers to get the thing to work. Both handsets (armsets?) come with music players and can be used in conjunction with Bluetooth headsets for more discretion, and both watches feature a pretty similar interface resolution. Where the LG GD910 clearly stands out however, is its inclusion of HSDPA connectivity and greater internal memory (2GB compared to the Samsung S9110's 40MB). Besides which, the LG watch phone just looks a lot more like that childhood fantasy you may have once held. Or not. Maybe you hated Dick Tracy, or didn't know who he was, but in either case you will surely find much fun to be had with owning a watch phone and with the added bonus that you will never again have to worry about losing your phone.
LG GW620 Announced!
A couple of months back, LG announced that they would make an Android Phone. This is the LG GW620 and it has been quite some time since the first announcement. The bright side of it all is that the new device is now available for everyone. Of course, if you are planning to get this Android smart phone, why not go check out some LG GW620 deals that would combine a great phone with a practical package. The GW620 has a physical keyboard making most applications easy to run. Particularly document based apps and messaging software. If you are holding out for a higher end phone, LG also has a Snapdragon Android in the works.
GW620 Hardware
This LG mobile phone may not seem like much, but once you have it in your hands you know that the GW620 is a beast in its own right. The 3 inch resistive touch screen complements the keyboard for easily accessing, navigating and using the Android operating system and the many features that go with it. The external shape looks really cute with the wide curves and matte finish. It has a 5 mega pixel camera, A-GPS and plenty of Google mobile applications ranging from messaging to maps to email.
Purchase or Wait
With other Android devices about to come out soon, you might be hard pressed to wait it out. After all, for a slightly higher price, the Motorola Milestone offers a physical keyboard, a larger screen and a newer Android OS; you can also choose to get any of the upcoming Snapdragon Androids. The charm of the GW620 quickly wears out if you do not consider the budget, and HTC is offering some Androids for the same price range as the GW620. Between the GW620 and HTC’s Androids, it all boils down to which looks better to you.
LG GD510 Pop – The Simplest Touch Screen Phone
In September, LG had announced one of its simplest to use touch screen designs to date, the LG GD510 Pop. LG has been innovative as far as touch screen phones are concerned, and is also the pioneer of the touch screen technology in mobile phones with the launch of LG Prada in 2007. The idea behind the launch of a simple and minimalist design in the shape of GD510 Pop was to address different consumer needs. LG’s researchers believe people want to use touch screen phones which are easy to navigate and offer no mind-boggling complications. While LG is also developing more illustrious touch screen phones such as the Chocolate series, it is concentrating to capitalize on the market for affordable touch screen phones, and the GD510 Pop is just the design that many people would like to use.
The LG GD510 Pop has enough entertainment oriented multimedia features to cater to the need of users who like to listen to music and watch movies on their phone without having to get tangled in a complicated user interface. The set also features a user-friendly web browser and a 3.0 mega pixel camera. But the compact design and a very light weight of just 90 grams make it suitable for any user who wants an attractive looking mobile phone with all the necessary multimedia features.
LG GD510 Pop features a 3 inch TFT touch screen which is fairly large as compared to the 4 inch size of the phone and offers a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels in 256 colors. The simple design only features a single physical button, which is used to perform different functions depending on the mode of the phone, signaling to the user about the functional by displaying a red or green light around it.
The LG GD510 Pop will be available in the markets by mid-October with many great LG GD510 Pop deals no doubt.
Need a good & discreet phone? LG GW550 is the answer
When we showed the LG GW550 to people and put a tape over LG’s logo, they asked whether it was a new BlackBerry phone! Such was the resemblance to BlackBerry phones, accentuated mainly by the QWERTY keyboard, which is extremely similar to that found in most BlackBerry phones. In hindsight, this is a good thing to do as BlackBerry have, undoubtedly, had a lot of success in selling their phones. There haven’t been a lot of LG GW550 Reviews, so let’s open the lid on the GW550.
If you’re going to buy this phone to show it off, I would advise you not to as it doesn’t really have eye – catching looks. The navigation keys are wedged between the screen and the QWERTY keyboard. The TFT screen, 2.5 inches in length, can display 65,000 colours and has a resolution of 320x240 pixels.
The Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard OS comes pre – installed on the phone. The UI isn’t very flashy, but it doesn’t make phone navigation difficult. The phone supports IM as well as push-email. PDF and Office files can only be viewed but not edited.
Media player is good and supports MP3, WMA and AAC songs. Songs are classified according to artist, album and genre. Video formats supported are 3GP and MPEG4. The internal memory of the phone can be expanded via the microSD memory card slot upto 8 GB.
A 3.2 megapixel camera is present and is quite capable. Pictures and videos can be edited using the pre-installed editor. HSDPA and HSUPA internet connectivity is available to surf the internet at high speeds. If you are in a place which doesn’t support 3G connectivity, HSCSD, EDGE and GPRS connectivity come to the rescue.
Overall, a good phone with decent looks and good functionality. Though no pricing or release date details have been released, we expect it to get released during the 3rd quarter of this year. Closer to this time there will be many great LG GW550 on contract deals around so be sure to shop around for the very best.
